One of my favourite parts of being a musician is working directly with the composer whose piece I’m playing. Yes you can ask as many notation questions as you want, but just having them in the room, going for lunch, listening to them speak, sometimes knowing them for years, answers so many of the mysteries in their music. Sometimes you try something and by accident find the right sound. Touching something that might only live in their mind, in their heart until it’s heard and real, is moving to me. Sometimes you spend weeks practicing a passage only to have to scratch it off. I enjoy every part of this precious process, it’s all taking the shape it needs to be.
